UAV Propulsion Physics
The Mechanics of Flight Endurance & Payload Penalties
1. Momentum Theory & Thrust Efficiency (g/W)
Hovering flight requires rotors to impart downward momentum to air masses. Propulsive efficiency ($\eta$ in grams per Watt) is non-linear:
Power = Thrust / η = (AUW · g) / η
Larger diameter propellers spinning at lower RPM (e.g. 21-inch props on Matrice 350) yield 8 to 11 g/W, whereas compact high-RPM quadcopters drop to 5 to 7 g/W under heavy payloads. Every additional 500g of sensor payload increases induced power proportionally.
2. LiPo Voltage Sag & The Peukert Effect
Lithium polymer battery packs exhibit internal resistance (R_int). When drawing high instantaneous discharge currents (C-rate), cell voltage drops:
- Voltage Sag: V_terminal = V_open - I · R_int. In high winds, current spikes cause early low-voltage RTH triggers even with chemical charge remaining.
- Temperature Drop: Below 5°C, internal chemical impedance climbs by over 300%, slashing deliverable Watt-hours unless battery self-heating insulation is active.
