Geodetic Field Standards
RTK / PPK Surveying & Flight Path Efficiency
1. Flight Line Strip Spacing Economics
Survey duration is directly dictated by flight strip pitch W_strip:
Distance = Area / (Footprint_width · (1 - SideOverlap))
Dropping side overlap from 75% down to 65% slashes total mission distance by 40%, saving multiple battery swaps on large acreage projects. However, high-relief structures, steep stockpiles, or forestry require 75%–80% side overlap to prevent stereoscopic occlusions.
2. GNSS Fix Quality & Checkpoints
High-accuracy survey deliverables require verified geodetic integrity:
- Fixed RTK Ratio: Ensure 100% RTK FIX status; satellite loss turns trajectories into FLOAT, causing decimeter-level elevation slips between flight strips.
- Checkpoints (CP): Always place at least 5 independent, non-fitted checkpoints measured with a terrestrial GNSS rover to independently certify ASPRS compliance.
